THE FACE IN THE BOOK

I was hunched over searching through old letters
Trying to locate a word I once had used
But any that I recognized slid off the page like silverfish
The ones which remained were in languages I did not know
I had not paid the price to know them
Though I strained to understand

I was browsing in a book of extravagant construction
Suddenly a face emerged
Like glare on a bust of Louis XIV
Like hunks of beef and clay pinned to a white sheet
Like rainbow sherbert tumbling down the face of a lion
And after I saw it
The words scattered like minnows
But I did not mind
