this is the sound of my mother
spring 2012

she talks to me underwater
like salt-wind
like the woman who bathed me in her tears
and taught me to shed my own

there is a great complex of thoughts gestating here
there is something rising out of low green things
there is a place for the hoe breaking the hard earth
there is earth
how near can you get your ear to this heart?
rattles shake as snakes crawl upon it
this is the sound of my mother

I just want to let you know that despite never meeting you or even talking to you on the phone, I feel confident in saying you are one of the most beautiful human beings I've ever had the honour of crossing paths with. And poems like this are the reason why.

I'm glad to know. I think you're beautiful too. I still enjoy the mix cd you made for me a few years back. And I can still picture you sitting in a cool, wintry place each time I hear that music. :)
