Reaching beyond permissions
I existed for a moment under a light
In what I imagined to be snow
Lightly dusting the tops of palm trees
Where monk parakeets dwelled in chambered nests
Paired or grouped
That light searched out and illuminated
My irreconcilables
All of them undeniable
I called it my Joe Jackson moment
Leaving my own bounds,
Entering the next moment
Hands stinging
Waiting for the no one who was coming
Wanting to come in from the cold

Waiting at a thousand airline gates
Sitting thousands of feet above the American continental mass
And Gulf of Mexico
I counted out my vanity
And relished in all my potential deaths
Dancing with all my skeletons
I ritualized the melba toast
I noted my location
I continued to exist

I like the line about ritualizing your melba toast.

I like the turns of phrase about the chambered nests and ritualizing the melba toast.
