On being grateful rather than critical of others

I've noticed that if and when I find myself being overly critical of a person or group that I'm usually operating out of fear. This is why I feel practicing gratitude (an act of the will) is so important. The more I focus my will on being grateful, the less I can use my energy creating fear scenarios and distorting actual relationships with those around me. This doesn't mean that I can't make reasonable judgements about a person's behavior. It just means that I can only change my own. I'm going to treat that person a certain way no matter what I've observed about them. I'm going to work at assuming the best about that person. I'm going to find ways to be grateful for that person. And I will do that with no expectations about any certain outcome. Something seemingly as silly as smiling when I think about that person can change my consciousness about that person. I believe it can even change the feeling the person has in my presence. Choosing to be grateful for someone will help me to generate real love for them.
